The Mausoleum and Mosque of
Qait Bey
Mamluk
period, 1472 - 1474
|
|
This complex is among the finest Islamic buildings in
Cairo. It consists of a portal area with a well, a
minaret (h. 131 ft; 40 m), the madrasa mosque with its
four areas arranged in a cruciform pattern around a
courtyard (the “four-iwan design), living rooms and
maintenance offices, as well as the mausoleum itself and
a chamber beside it for the tombs of the sultan’s four
wives.
The dome and minaret are ornamented with filigree
arabesque decoration, and the interior too was adorned
with valuable incrustations (inlay decoration), and
marble floors with intarsia work. Qait Bey’s magnificent
cenotaph (tomb without a body in it) stands before the
prayer niche in the mausoleum, with a reliquary beside
it containing the black footprints of the Prophet
Muhammad from Mecca.
